Short pile stitch (variation 1)
This canvaswork stitch is formed by a looping the thread around the warp and under the weft of the canvas. It leaves a loop on the surface which can either be cut to form a piled surface or left as a loop.

Method
Starting at the bottom left corner of your design area, count one canvas thread to the right and two threads up and take your needle down through the canvas. Leave a tail on the surface.
Holding the tail straight down against the canvas, bring the needle up one canvas thread to the left.
Cross over the tail and take the needle down one intersection to the right and below to secure the tail into position with a diagonal stitch.
Bring the needle up one canvas thread below.
Count two canvas threads to the right and two threads up and take the needle down, leaving a loop on the surface.
Use your little finger as a gauge to keep the loops an even length and repeat the sequence.
Continue along the row from left to right.
Work subsequent rows one canvas thread above. They should be offset from the previous row by one vertical canvas thread and so the stitches sit between the previous ones.
