This needlelace stitch is one of the simplest and is used to fasten a thread before starting stitching, or for anchoring threads laid across an area or to create a net mesh.

The example has been worked on a tablemat worked in guipure d’art, a 19th century development of filet lace.

Weldon’s Practical point lace published in the early 1900s shows this stitch under the name netting stitch.

Make a loop with your thread, keeping your working thread uppermost and place the loop over the section of net you want to knot your thread onto.

Take your needle under a thread of the net and up into the the loop.  Holding the loop in place, pull through to tighten.
