Double buttonhole bars (variation)

This version of double buttonhole bars gives a slightly more decorative effect than the original version. Up and down blanket stitch is worked along bar, and then a second row is worked along the other side of the bar, between the ‘legs’ of the first row. This results in a bar which has an embellished raised edge on both sides.
They can be woven over threads from the ground fabric (where most of the fabric has been cut away), or over threads which have been stitched across the space. For a needlelace version of this stitch, see Ardenza point

N.B. Thérèse de Dillmont in her 1886 Encyclopedia of Needlework calls this stitch ‘Bar with two rows of knots’.

Up and down blanket stitch

Method
Prepare bars of at least three threads to work onto.
Bring the thread to the surface one side of the base of a bar.
Lay the working thread to the left. Take the needle under the bar from right to left and up in the loop.
Pull the stitch to the base of the bar and tension the thread to the left.
Lay the working thread to the right. Take the needle under the bar from left to right and up in the loop.
Pull the stitch close to the last previous one to create a pair and tension the thread to the left. This creates your first up and down blanket stitch.
Continue working these pairs along the bar aiming to space them evenly by leaving a space equal to the thread pairs.
At the end of the bar take the needle down through the fabric on the left hand side. Bring the thread back to the surface at the top of the bar on the right hand side.
Lay the thread to the right. Insert the needle to the left of the bar between it and the previous buttonhole stitch in the space between two pairs. Take it under the bar and up in the loop to form a new buttonhole stitch.
Lay the thread to the left. Take the needle from right to left under the bar and up in the loop to complete the pair.
Continue working pairs of up and down buttonhole into each space on the bar to complete a variation of a double buttonhole bar.
