This pulled thread stitch consists of a diagonal lines of single faggot stitch, each followed by a diagonal row of parallel oblique lines or chevrons.

Despite the stitch being worked in diagonal rows, it has a gridded appearance.

Method

1

Complete a horizontal stitch from left to right over three fabric threads, then count three diagonal intersections down to the left, bring the needle up to the surface and pull firmly on the thread so as to distort the weave of the fabric.

2

Create a vertical stitch taking the needle up over three threads to meet the beginning of the horizontal stitch, then count three diagonal intersections down to the left, bring the needle up to the surface and pull firmly on the thread.

3

Repeat the last two stitches across the fabric in a line running down to the left.  This is single faggot stitch.

4

Complete a diagonal stitch from bottom left to top right over three intersections, then count three fabric threads to the left, bring the needle up to the surface and pull firmly on the thread.

5

Complete another diagonal stitch from bottom left to top right over three intersections, then count down over three horizontal fabric threads and bring the needle up to the surface and pull firmly on the thread.

6

Repeat the last two stitches across the fabric in a line running diagonally up to the right.

7

Continue to fill the shape
